Growing Equity in Science & Technology (GEST)

GEST is a PhD student-led, collaborative event designed to expose middle school children to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities, resources, and role models. GEST was created to offer a space for local students from diverse backgrounds, including those from under-represented groups, to engage in hands-on activities in an inclusive environment to inspire the next generation of STEM practitioners. Hosted annually by the Duke University Marine Lab, I have volunteered in some capacity since it was originally conceptualized in 2017, and over the years I have acquired an increasing leadership role in its organization.

The Collaboratory for Coastal Adaptation over Space and Time (C-CoAST)

The Collaboratory for Coastal Adaptation over Space & Time (C-CoAST) is a research network focused on coastal resilience; a collaboration among natural and social scientists, policymakers, practitioners and other community stakeholders, C-CoAST seeks to co-develop research questions that help coastal communities address short-term challenges to long-term coastal management solutions. A research assistantship as a social science data analyst gave me the opportunity to participate in a project with C-CoAST, that led to the “Community Gallery Walks,” an interactive, self-guided tour through the complex, non-linear, and interconnected decision-making processes and their consequences for coastal communities.

C-CoAST is a Research Coordination Network (RCN) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to address grand challenges in coastal resilience.
